HUMAN RIGHTS AND LAW

Internship Program

TAHR is proud to announce the official commencement of its first formal training program, the Human Rights and Law Internship Program. Funded by a generous grant from the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, the program will bring two law students, graduate students or upper-level undergraduates to TAHR to work part-time.

The responsibilities of the interns cover two main areas: first, they will receive and process the reports that TAHR receives from victims of human rights abuses; they will then compile the relevant data and draft summaries of the cases, which can then be used to make a decision to assist the victim or to refer his/her case to the proper source of assistance. Second, they will conduct legal research into various issues or topics; this will assist TAHR in speaking out on a wider variety of issues to the public or to policy-makers. In many cases the results will be used in press releases or published as articles.

We expect that this project will achieve the following major objectives:

  1. Heightening awareness of human rights issues and the possibilities of work in the field among university students in general and law students in particular;
  2. Giving the interns exposure both to the workings of a civil society organization and to a range of real-life problems, which experience they can take with them in their future careers;
  3. Enabling TAHR to expand its function as an organization that can provide some kind of assistance to individuals with human rights problems (this function is currently severely curtailed, because our staff are occupied with ongoing projects or administrative work; thus, we currently turn away people whom we might be able to assist);
  4. Enhancing TAHR's activity to articulate our views clearly and in a timely fashion in a manner that will be more persuasive to the legal community and to legislators;
  5. Enabling TAHR to increase the scope and professionalism of our in-depth reporting on legal issues.

Applications are now open for the fall semester (starting September 1998). If you know any Taiwanese student who would like to apply, please refer him or her to the application materials, found on the Chinese side of our web page (click HERE for direct access).
